  • Ancient coat of arms of the city of Milan: original from the 19th century, carved and lacquered crown and crusader shield. Period: 1800 Measurements: H 68 x W 40.5 x D 7.5 cm
  • Ancient mercury barometer mounted on a mahogany table signed Cesare Vaselli from the early 19th century. This ancient measuring instrument consists of a glass tube filled with mercury and turned with the open side downwards inside a glass bulb containing other mercury. The mercury column tends to descend into the bulb leaving the void behind it: by measuring the height of the column the atmospheric pressure can be calculated. Mercury was already known in ancient times to the Chinese and Hindus; it was found in Egyptian tombs dated around 1500 BC. from 500 BC. begins its use as an amalgam for other metals. The ancient Greeks used it as a pigment for paintings, and the Romans used it in cosmetics. According to medieval alchemists it was the material from which everything else had been formed, and they thought that once hardened it would turn into gold.

  • Ayutthaya Buddha head carved in sandstone, produced in Siam in about 1650. With authentication from the Department of Oriental Art, Antique Silver, (18a Northampton square, London, E.C. 1). The Buddha's head is usually depicted in a state of meditation, the faint smile on the statue symbolising his tranquil and aristocratic nature. On the top of his head he has a prominent protrusion, called "uṣṇīṣa", oval-shaped, representing the splendour of spiritual energy, but its original function was as a crown; while the short curly hair shows that Prince Siddhartha shed his noble title and privileges.   • Gorgeous little bird in Buccellati style, in rock crystal and silver. With Milanese punch from the early 1900s, not deciphered. Total weight 550 grams. Period: Early 1900s Measurements: H 8.4 x W 9.4 x D 14.7 cm
