    Screen printing on mirror in polished stainless steel, edition 80/80. MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO was born in Biella in 1933. He began exhibiting in 1955 and in 1960 he held his first solo show at the Galatea Gallery in Turin. His first pictorial production is characterized by a research on self-portrait, experimenting different techniques recalling Fontana, Jean du Buffet and Pollock. Through this research he accomplishes two works on black emaled canvas, which later lead him to his mirror paintings in 1961. In the two-year period 1961-1962 he arrives at the creation of mirror paintings, which directly include the presence of the viewer, the real dimension of time in the work and also reopen the perspective, overturning the Renaissance one closed by the avant-garde of the twentieth century. With these works Pistoletto quickly achieved international recognition and success, which led him to carry out, already during the 1960s, personal exhibitions in prestigious galleries and museums in Europe and the United States. The mirror paintings will form the basis of his subsequent artistic production and theoretical reflection. Between 1965 and 1966 he produced a set of works entitled Minus Objects, considered fundamental for the birth of Arte Povera, an artistic movement of which Pistoletto is the animator and protagonist. Starting from 1967 he carried out, outside the traditional exhibition spaces, actions that represent the first manifestations of that “creative collaboration” that Pistoletto will develop over the following decades, bringing together artists from different disciplines and increasingly wider sectors of society. Between 1975 and 1976 he created a cycle of twelve consecutive exhibitions, Le Stanze, at the Stein Gallery in Turin, the first of a series of complex works organized over a year, called "continents of time", as White Year (1989 ) and Happy Turtle (1992). In 1978 he held an exhibition during which he presented two fundamental directions of his future research and artistic production: Division and multiplication of the mirror and Art dives in religion. At the beginning of the eighties he created a series of sculptures in rigid polyurethane, translated into marble for the personal exhibition of 1984 at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence. From 1985 to 1989 he created the series of “dark” volumes called Arte dello squallore (Art of Squalor). During the nineties, with Progetto Arte and with the creation in Biella of Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto and the University of Ideas, he puts art in an active relationship with the different areas of the social context in order to inspire and produce a responsible transformation of society. In 2003 he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. In 2004 the University of Turin awarded him an honorary degree in Political Science. On this occasion the artist announces what constitutes the most recent phase of his work, called Terzo Paradiso. In 2007 he received the Wolf Foundation Prize in Arts in Jerusalem, "for his constantly creative career as an artist, educator and activator, whose tireless intelligence has given rise to premonitory art forms that contribute to a new understanding of the world". In 2010 he is the author of the essay Il Terzo Paradiso, published in Italian, English, French and German. In 2012 he promoted the Rebirth-day, the first universal day of rebirth, celebrated every year on 21th December with initiatives carried out in different places around the world. In 2013 the Louvre Museum in Paris hosts his solo exhibition Michelangelo Pistoletto, année un - le paradis sur terre. In the same year he received the Praemium Imperiale for painting in Tokyo. In May 2015, the Universidad de las Artes de Havana awarded him an honorary degree. In the same year he created a large-scale work, entitled Rebirth, located in the park of the Palace of Nations in Geneva, headquarters of the United Nations Organization. In 2017 his text Hominitism and Demopraxia was published. Manifesto for a regeneration of society. Between 2018 and 2020 the activity of the Third Paradise is further intensified, in particular through the development of an international network of Embassies and Forums. In these same years he is also particularly active in various countries of Latin America with personal exhibitions and various initiatives related to the Third Paradise.

    "The prayer" - Félix Auguste Clément (20 May 1826, Donzère - 2 February 1888, Algiers), oil on canvas from the second half of the 19th century, signed on the lower left. The painter known for his orientalist scenes, dedicates this painting to the love of a mother for her sick child, the attention to detail is very clear, such as the light that gives three-dimensionality hitting the main subjects in great prominence on the dark background. His first studies were at the École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon with Jean-Claude Bonnefond. In 1848 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied with Michel Martin Drolling and François-Édouard Picot. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1856 for his painting of the return of the young Tobias. He remained in Rome for several years, followed by a visit to Egypt in 1862, where he painted scenes of princely activities, made decorative works for palaces and sketched monuments; some of them quite remote. Many works were made at the request of the Khedive. In 1868 he returned to France. Four years later, he was commissioned by the government to copy Andrea Mantegna's paintings in Padua, but was forced to return due to illness. He was a professor at the École Nationale in Lyon from 1874 to 1877, then he retired. He participated in the Second Annual International Exhibition in London (1872), the Expo Vienna 1873 and the Exposition Universelle (1878). It is reported that Henri Rousseau enlisted the help of Clément in obtaining permission to copy paintings in the Louvre; privilege reserved for students of recognized institutions. He died in Algiers, where he had spent the winter trying to recover.

    "Landscape" - Oil on canvas by George Pieter Westenberg (11 September 1791, Nijmegen, Netherlands - 26 December 1873, Brummen) signed and dated 1853 in the lower right corner. Landscape and animal painter, Pieter Westenberg was a pupil of Jan Hulswit in Amsterdam from 1808 to 1813, and he also attended the drawing academy in Amsterdam. Particularly inspired by 17th-century Dutch landscape painters, Westenberg has regularly exhibited landscapes and city views from 1814 onwards. He has undertaken two study trips; in 1816 in Gelderland and Bentheim in Germany and the following year in the Ruhr area and along the Rhine; the studies and sketches he made on both trips would have a profound effect on his later paintings and drawings. He also worked as a drawing master for several wealthy families, but in 1836 he moved to Haarlem, where two years later he was appointed director of the Collection of Paintings by Living Masters in the Paviljoen Welgelegen. In 1857 he went with his family to Batavia to take up a post in the colonial administration of Java.

    "The Matterhorn with the blue lake" oil on canvas from the early 1920s by Giovanni Battista Costa (Rapallo 1858 - Genoa 1838). The painting has been restored. Giovanni Battista Costa was born in Rapallo in 1858 in a wealthy family and dedicated his entire life to art. He participated, since 1879, in the exhibitions of the Promoting Society of Fine Arts in Genoa and in numerous other important Italian expositions, exhibiting, until 1921, over 100 paintings, mainly landscapes, seascapes and portraits. In 1895 he was appointed Academic of Merit of Ligustica, where he, too, teached. He began his artistic studies at the Ligustica Academy (and partly in Rome), soon going from a painting linked to tradition to the execution of works from life, probably under the guidance of Tammar Luxoro director, from 1874, of the new Landscape School. Consequently, the links with the Genoese Gray School, the Rivara School (in Piedmont) and the Tuscan Macchiaiolo movement appear to be close. The analysis of some of his works lead us to bring Costa closer to some Lombard painters of the 19th century: for example Carcano, especially for the softness of the colours. He takes part in numerous national exhibitions: awarded in 1897 in Venice, he participates in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Turin in 1898; in 1906 we find it at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan; also worth mentioning is his participation in the first Quadrennial Exhibition in Turin in 1902. Giovanni Battista Costa was also a skilled portrait painter and painted in Venice, Parma, Viareggio, Ivrea, Engadina, Valle d’Aosta. Even though he was shy and solitary, he was part of two important schools: the Ligurian Artistic Family (1893 -1910 circa) and the Teatro Group (from 1908); refers to the upper room of the Caffè degli Amici of the Carlo Felice Theater. He is an artist particularly attentive to the social problems of the late nineteenth century. His works appear, in retrospect, in Genoa at the exhibition of Ligurian Painters of the Nineteenth Century (Palazzo Rosso, 1938) and at the Commemorative Exhibition at the San Matteo Gallery, 1952. In his maturity he turned his interest to the representation of mountain landscapes. In conclusion, we can identify three different ways of painting by Costa: the first is related to academic painting, a bit rigid (church interiors and portraiture); the second, realist, with warm colours and close to the themes of the Grays and Rivarians (affinity with Benedetto Musso). He learned the basics of art from his father Ugo, then attended the Accademia Albertina, a pupil of Andrea Marchisio and Paolo Gaidano, for only three years, because he was forced to help his father in the scenography works. He was a skilled landscape painter. It began in Vignola in 1907 with an alpine landscape. He held several solo exhibitions and took part in many exhibitions. He participated in the events of the Promotrice alle Belle Arti in Turin for twenty consecutive years (awarded with a gold medal) and in the circle of artists in Turin.     "Sibilla Persica" oil on canvas, a work made between the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Large painting, of excellent quality, depicting the Persian Sibyl. Coeval frame, re-painted, the surface has no previous restorations, apart from small touches to be done, it is in excellent condition. The painting is a copy of the "Persian Sibyl" of 1647, preserved in the Capitoline Museums, in Rome, by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591-1666), one of the most important Italian painters of the 17th century. The Sibyl is a mythological figure present in both Greek and Roman culture. The classical tradition tells us that she was dealing with virgin women endowed with prophetic virtues, derived from the intercession of a divinity (which was usually Apollo); they were therefore able to provide responses or make predictions and were worshiped for this. The first historical reference to the Sibyls is found among the works of Plato where, however, he indicates only one. Varrone will be the first to provide a real list of these mythological figures among which the Persian Sibyl will also appear, the subject of this portrait, counted among the oldest. The classical tradition divided them into groups, based on their geographical origin: oriental, Greek-Ionic and Greek-Italic; the Persian Sibyl (or Persian) belonged to the eastern group.     Bronze sculpture by Giacomo Buzzi Reschini (Viggiù, 4 September 1881 - Turin, 18 September 1962) dating back to the early 1900s. GIACOMO BUZZI RESCHINI The son of a marble craftsman, he went to Turin at a very young age to attend the Albertina Academy under the guidance of Luigi Belli first and then Leonardo Bistolf; however, he soon left school to open his own studio. In Turin he received awards and honors: in 1909 he made two medallions and presented the works "Non omnis moriar", "Vanaexpected", "Stella Alpina" (purchased by King Vittorio Emanuele III) at the Exhibition of Fine Arts, while in 1911 he received the gold medal for two equestrian groups. After the First World War, Buzzi Reschini resumed his activity by becoming friends with Canonica, Calandra, Bistolf, Pogliaghi and Enrico Butti, his fellow citizen. Buzzi Reschini was a brilliant artist: if his entire production is qualified by adhering to the romantic theme, liberty implications prevail in the works of the beginning of the century, while later he moved towards more sober and monumental forms, typical of the years of the "twentieth century". Of his vast production, we remember: "The Immaculate Conception" (1928), in travertine, with a height of 5 m, for the Palazzo del Governorato of the Vatican City; "Saints Cyril and Methodius" for the Bohemian College in Rome; "the War Memorial of Chieri" (1925), of Croce Mosso, of Bordighera, of San Damiano d’Asti (1927) and of Agliè; "the Four Prophets" (post 1930) for the facade of the church of the Annunciata in Turin, for which he also painted the Angels of the interior and the doors with Stories of the Virgin. "the Supreme Judgment" in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, later destroyed in a bombing in 1943; "The last kiss" for the Monumental Cemetery of Vercelli; "The three Marys"," The Mass of the Dead"," Maternity"," S. Sebastiano"," La Pietà", "S. Francesco" for the Turin Cemetery; "The guards at the sepulcher" (1957). In the 1960s, next to the Butti Museum in Viggiù, he built a new pavilion with the intention of hosting his own plaster cast gallery and the plaster casts of other members of the Viggiutese sculpture of the twentieth century. His models are in fact set up in the central hall and in room II of the building.

    "This Arno with slow waters" - Oil on panel by Galileo Chini, signed on the lower right, bears the dedication on the back to his friend Giuseppe Orsi and the date 14 September 1943. CHINI GALILEO. Born on December 2, 1873 in Florence, died on August 23, 1956, then blind. As a boy he was a simple painter; at twenty he decided to study the ancient and modern masters. In 1899 with some friends he created "The Art of Ceramics", managing to give this feat a new physiognomy to Italian majolica. He has participated in numerous and important exhibitions in Paris, Leningrad, Barcelona, ​​Saint-Louis, Brussels and in Italian exhibitions, including the Venice Biennials from IV to XVII.
